Troutdale Wellness Programs Keep Your Pets Healthy

Ella.jpg

Wellness care is essential to keeping your pet health and active and all stages of their lives. At Paws & Claws Pet Medical Center, we offer routine wellness exams, vaccinations, spay and neuter services, dental care and preventive medicine for the Troutdale and Gresham pet communities.

We believe that prevention is the best medicine. Just like for humans, annual check-ups are essential to keeping your pet healthy and ensuring any medical issues are caught and treated early. Annual check-ups are also a smart investment for your pet's health; treating an illness in the early stages or preventing it in the first place is a lot less expensive and less traumatic than paying for emergency care.

During our regular exams, our veterinarian will give your dog or cat a full physical and administer routine laboratory tests. These tests are important diagnostic tools, and include a blood count, urinalysis, blood chemistry, and parasite screening. Cats are also tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus. Our veterinarians will also confirm that your pet is up to date on vaccinations. Some vaccines, like rabies, require annual administration, while other vaccinations require booster shots every three years.

Our wellness program is tailored to each pet, depending on the stage of his or her life. Puppies and kittens need to receive a series of shots between the ages of eight weeks and sixteen weeks. Your pet may also need to be de-wormed and then placed on heartworm and flea control medication. With our affordable wellness care for puppies and kittens, we ensure that your new family member receives the vaccinations he or she needs, and that there’s still money left over for new toys and treats.

As your pet ages, routine wellness testing will ensure your pet is healthy and active. For older pets, our veterinarians recommend semi-annual exams. Preventive care is especially important because it allows us to manage many age-related conditions, including arthritis, heart disease, cancer, and thyroid imbalance. When our veterinarian is able to catch these conditions early, we are better able to treat or manage the symptoms.

Routine dental care is also an important part of our wellness programs. Over time, bacteria can build up in your pet’s mouth, eventually getting below the gum line and causing inflammation and an infection like gingivitis. During an oral examination, we check for plaque buildup and then use ultrasonic cleaning and scaling to remove plaque and polish the teeth.

While a wellness program is designed to keep your pet healthy, we know that emergencies happen. Our Troutdale veterinary hospital is prepared to treat pets for emergency and urgent care any time our clinic is open.
