pets_med.jpgThe American Association of Veterinary Medicine estimates that as many as two-thirds of America's pet cats and dogs have some sort of dental disease. Untreated, dental disease can progress to other health problems, causing pain and suffering for your pet and unneeded expense to you. Still, few American pet owners are attuned to the importance of maintaining good dental health for their cats and dogs. People who would be appalled at the thought of not brushing their own teeth never think to brush their pet's teeth.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums and the tissues that support the teeth. This condition is usually caused by a buildup in plaque on the teeth. Untreated, periodontal disease can result in loss of teeth, infection, damage to the kidney, heart and liver, and even death. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease and risk of stroke in humans, although no similar studies have been done to prove or disprove this link in pets.

Troutdale Pet Dental Care Prevents Periodontal Disease

Any pet wellness program should include regular dental cleanings for your dog or cat. At Paws & Claws Pet Medical Center, our veterinarian uses modern ultrasound equipment to painlessly and safely clean your pet's teeth, both above and below the gum line. Our Troutdale pet dental technicians then polish your pet's teeth to make them more resistant to plaque. If necessary, our Gresham area veterinary clinic also performs tooth extraction and oral surgery. Don't wait until your pet's teeth are inflamed and making it difficult for him or her to eat. Start a habit of regular pet dental visits now.

Has your Troutdale or Gresham area pet had a recent bout with periodontal disease? Was your veterinarian able to successfully treat your cat or dog?
